Easy and helpful tips to winterize your home.
Old Man Winter is back and since the forecast is calling for a colder and wetter winter this year, be prepared. Below are 7 easy and helpful tips to get your home winterized.
1. Stop Drafts!
The U.S. Department of Energy reports that a simple draft can waste between 5-30% of energy use. If you feel a draft coming in from under a door simply roll a towel and place it along the bottom of the door. You can purchase fancier versions of this but a towel works great. Make sure that drafts are not affecting your thermostat. A draft can give your thermostat a false reading and therefore cause it to work overtime. If you have drafty single-pane windows, pick up a Window Insulation Kit for under $10.00.
2. Change Furnace Filters!
During the heating season you should change your furnace filters once a month. Dirty filters restrict air flow therefore increasing energy demand. You may also consider switching to an electrostatic filter. Electrostatic filters catch between 40-70% more debris than fiberglass filters. Even better are HEPA filters which gather up to 99% of debris such as molds, bacterias, pollen, viruses, etc.
3. Drain A/C & Water Lines!
Simply drain any hoses or A/C pipes and be sure there is no pooling water in the equipment. Make sure all outdoor hoses are rolled up and stored away for the winter. Cover any hose bibs with some type of insulator. You can purchase a hose bib cover for under $5.00
4. Turn Down Your Water Heater!
Most home water heaters are set at 140 degrees but most of us don’t use or need water that hot. However you are paying extra for the energy it costs to heat the water. Turning down your water heater can save you between 6-10% on you heating bill.
5. Tune Up Your Furnace!
Keeping your furnace clean, lubricated, and properly adjusted can save you up to 5% on your energy bill. If your furnace is old, it might be time for an upgrade. New furnaces can be expensive but it will save you in the long run.
6. Reprogram Your Thermostat!
It’s probably not necessary to keep your heat on all day long. Set your thermostat to come on 1 hour before you get home and turn it off at night when you go to sleep. Did you know that every degree you turn down your thermostat can save you between 1-3% on your heating bill?
7. Insulate Your Attic Floor and Basement Ceiling!
We all know that heat rises and if your attic is not well insulated, the heat goes up and out. Adding insulation to all interior walls can make a huge difference as well.
